Former U.S. President Joe Biden criticized President Donald Trump’s reported suggestion that Ukraine should cede territory to Russia, calling it a “modern-day appeasement” that would fail to satisfy Moscow. In an interview aired by the BBC on Wednesday, Biden warned against underestimating Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions and cautioned that conceding land would only embolden further aggression.
“Putin believes Ukraine is part of ‘mother Russia,’ and anybody who thinks he’s going to stop is just foolish,” Biden stated. “I just don’t understand how people think that if we allow a dictator, a thug, to take significant portions of land that aren’t his, that that’s going to satisfy him.”
Biden’s remarks come amid growing concerns over the West’s long-term support for Ukraine as the war continues. He stressed that yielding to authoritarian demands would undermine global stability and set a dangerous precedent.
The President also voiced concern over America’s reputation among its European allies. He said European leaders are beginning to question U.S. reliability and leadership on the global stage. “Europe is going to lose confidence in the certainty of America,” he said. “They’re wondering, ‘Can I rely on the United States? Are they going to be there?’”
Biden’s comments reinforce his administration’s continued commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and signal sharp opposition to Trump’s foreign policy stance. As the 2024 U.S. presidential race heats up, foreign policy differences—especially on Ukraine—are expected to be a defining issue between the two potential candidates.
