U.S. and Colombia Avoid Trade War After Migrant Agreement

The United States and Colombia averted a potential trade war after Colombia agreed to accept military aircraft carrying deported migrants. The White House announced the resolution late Sunday, averting tariffs and sanctions threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump over Colombia's earlier refusal.

Colombia committed to accepting deportees, including those on U.S. military flights, in line with Trump’s immigration policies. Draft measures imposing tariffs up to 50% on Colombian goods, visa restrictions on officials, and financial sanctions remain on hold, contingent on Colombia honoring the agreement.

Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo confirmed the impasse was resolved, stating the government would facilitate the deportees’ dignified return, including offering the presidential plane for assistance. Colombian officials plan to visit Washington for follow-up discussions.

The U.S. is Colombia's largest trading partner, accounting for $33.8 billion in two-way trade in 2023. Colombia relies on U.S. market access for about a third of its exports, or 4% of its GDP, according to UBS Global Wealth Management. The standoff risked destabilizing this critical trade relationship.

The use of U.S. military aircraft for deportations has drawn criticism. Similar flights to Guatemala and refusals from Mexico and Brazil highlighted tensions surrounding the policy. Colombian President Gustavo Petro opposed military deportations, emphasizing the need for humane treatment and offering civilian transport for migrants.

Brazil condemned "degrading treatment" after a deportation flight involving handcuffed migrants, prompting Brazilian Air Force intervention. Trump’s immigration crackdown includes border security measures, asylum restrictions, and citizenship limitations.

This resolution underscores the geopolitical and economic stakes in U.S. immigration policy, particularly for Latin American nations reliant on U.S. trade.
