U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that Hamas received temporary approval from Washington to carry out internal security operations in the Gaza Strip following a ceasefire agreement. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said the Palestinian militant group was permitted “for a period of time” to conduct security measures aimed at “stopping the problems” in the war-ravaged enclave.
Since the ceasefire took effect on Friday, Hamas has deployed internal security forces throughout Gaza, citing the need to curb lawlessness, looting, and a potential security vacuum. The group’s Interior Ministry stated that these operations are designed to restore order as nearly two million displaced residents begin returning to areas destroyed during the months-long conflict triggered by Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel.
Addressing reporters, Trump said, “They do want to stop the problems, and they’ve been open about it. We gave them approval for a period of time. You have close to 2 million people going back to demolished buildings, and a lot of bad things can happen. We want it to be safe. I think it’s going to be fine. Who knows for sure.”
In recent days, Hamas security units have clashed with members of a local clan in Gaza City amid efforts to maintain order. On Sunday, the Hamas Interior Ministry announced an amnesty for individuals linked to “outlawed gangs” accused of stealing humanitarian aid and looting, provided they were not involved in violent crimes.
Much of Gaza remains in ruins after the war, with widespread destruction to homes and infrastructure. While Trump’s statement signals a pragmatic move to stabilize Gaza temporarily, the U.S. continues to insist that Hamas must disarm and relinquish control of the territory under Trump’s broader peace proposal.
