In what appeared to be a predictable outcome that angered many during the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse, many far-right figures have lauded the verdict of the state court. The family of one of the victims ripped into twice-impeached former President Donald Trump for celebrating the not guilty verdict.
Speaking with Joy Reid on MSNBC, John Huber, the father of Anthony Huber, one of the two victims who were fatally shot by Rittenhouse during the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, criticized the former president as well as right-wing outlets for trying to depict Rittenhouse as a “hero” and that his son deserved to get killed. Huber also clarified the stories being circulated about his son, saying that his son was a “pacifist” who would never engage with someone in a fight.
“Trump had no business weighing in on it. You know, I stopped supporting him the day he offended me when he said ‘Oh, looks like self-defense.’ We didn’t even know all the details. Nobody had even seen all the videos. And he spoke up on it. Who does he think he is? An expert? You know, I lost all respect for him,” said Huber.
When it came to Republicans and Trump loyalists like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Huber said that he hopes she would never have to experience any of her children getting killed along with having the controversy that surrounded it. Huber added that the family has not had time to properly grieve for his son’s death.
To this day, the twice-impeached former president has refused to say he lost the election and has peddled the false claim of election fraud that was ultimately unsuccessful. Shortly after his loss to Joe Biden, his allies and lawyers contested the results in the states that Biden won in the hopes of overturning results. Over 60 lawsuits contesting the results were dismissed by the courts.
Lawyers Gary D. Felder and Ernest John Walker, following the former president’s false election fraud claims, filed a lawsuit to contest the 2020 election results only to lose, according to the Washington Post. The outlet reported that Colorado Magistrate judge N. Reid Neureiter issued a fine of nearly $187,000 that the judge hopes will keep others from trying to file lawsuits for the same purpose.
The judge also ordered the lawyers to pay legal fees to the states of Michigan and Pennsylvania, who were the defendants of the lawsuit.
